June is Elder Abuse Awareness Month

With World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15 and the month of June recognized as Elder Abuse Awareness Month, Senior & Disability Services (S&DS), a division of Lane Council of Governments (LCOG), wants to take a moment to share the work that LCOG’s Adult Protective Services Team (APS) is doing to increase awareness of elder abuse in our community.

Every day, our APS team’s dedication and skill makes a difference in helping some of our most vulnerable community members access support and resources to improve their safety and quality of life. In 2023, our APS team screened 6,478 reports of abuse and investigated 2,383 cases.

We all play a role in preventing, recognizing, and reporting elder abuse as well as addressing root causes of abuse and neglect that can place our community members at increased risk. Please reach out if you have questions about APS services by calling 541-682-4140 or email abusereporting@lcog.org.

Adult Protective Services

Our S&DS division is responsible for responding to all allegations of abuse or neglect involving persons 65 years or older and people with physical disabilities 18 years or older in Lane County. S&DS is also responsible for investigating allegations of abuse or neglect involving residents of licensed care facilities and individuals living in their homes.

Types of Abuse

  • Physical harm or injury
  • Neglect
  • Financial exploitation
  • Verbal or emotional abuse
  • Involuntary seclusion
  • Wrongful restraint
  • Sexual abuse
  • Abandonment
  • Self-neglect

What We Do

  • Receive reports of abuse, neglect, or self-neglect
  • Conduct unannounced interviews with the alleged victim, alleged perpetrator, and relevant witnesses
  • Provide and document risk assessment of alleged victims
  • Obtain and review any available documentary or physical evidence
  • Determine the facts of the case, based on the available evidence
  • Assist victims to access resources and services to promote safety
  • Conclude whether the majority of the evidence indicates that the incident occurred and whether abuse or neglect is substantiated, unsubstantiated, or inconclusive

Anyone can report abuse. You can report it for yourself or for someone else. The reporter's name is kept confidential, and you do not have to provide your name when making a report of abuse.
