Purpose:
The police officer is the key to the success in a police department. The City of Newport is looking for an entry-level police officer. The attainment of the police mission depends upon how well patrol officers perform their complex and demanding jobs.
Police officers are directly responsible for the law enforcement activities within an assigned area. They are the primary force in achieving compliance with established laws through reasonable enforcement tactics dedicated to the protection and service of each individual citizen.
$2,500 sign-on bonus to be paid at the end of the first full payroll cycle.
$2,500 retention bonus paid after working 12 full months for the City of Newport.

Minimum Qualifications:
Graduation from high school or completed a GED program; must be 21 years of age; must be a U.S. citizen; must possess, or be able to obtain by time of hire, a valid Oregon Driver's License without record of suspension or revocation in any state; successfully pass a drug test and full background investigation verifying any prior criminal convictions; be of good moral and ethical character certifiable as a Police Officer in the state of Oregon based on standards established by the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST); must successfully complete the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST ) basic police academy and up to an 18 month probationary period. (Must pass written test, oral interview and medical physical); must be able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to meet Department's physical standards and pass ORPAT (Oregon Physical Agility Test) to the minimum standards set by DPSST.
